Beyond Human Film Season

This August, we present a new film season that questions what it means to be human. Inspired by the thought-provoking works of artist LuYang (on display until 17 September), Beyond Human delves into themes of identity, technology, and the human condition. This season includes screenings of After Yang (2021), Inuyashiki (2018) and Karmalink (2018), each showcasing a unique perspective that invites us to reflect on the nature of our existence and the interconnectedness of our lives.

Prepare to be captivated, challenged, and inspired as we transcend binary understandings of the human mind and body and contemplate the boundless possibilities of existence in an ever-changing world.

AFTER YANG (2021)

In the near future, a family grapples with feelings of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down. When his young daughter’s beloved companion — an android named Yang (Justin H. Min) — malfunctions, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him. In the process, Jake discovers the life that has been passing in front of him, reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) across a distance he didn’t know was there. Written, directed, and edited by Kogonada (Columbus, Pachinko).

Inuyashiki (2018)

Are humans inherently good or evil? A blinding light in the night sky and an alien encounter gifts Inuyashiki Ichirou, an office worker, with alien technology and limitless powers. After being down on his luck, it turns out that these strange, new changes are just what Ichirou needs to take a new lease on life and now it seems like there's nothing to stop him from being a hero worthy of the respect that he never had before... unless there was someone else out there who also experienced similar changes...

Karmalink (2021)

In order to save his family home, 13-year-old Leng Heng enlists his friends and the streetwise Srey Leak to hunt down a long-lost golden Buddha. But as their treasure hunt gathers pace, Leng Heng is pulled deeper into the world of a brilliant neuroscientist who is desperate to unlock the key to the mysteries behind karma and reincarnation. Leng Heng just might be the answer he has been searching for.

Access

This screening takes place in The Box on the Ground Floor. All galleries and cinema screens are accessible to visitors with limited mobility, including wheelchair users.

An induction loop is not available for these screenings. All films will be screened with subtitles.

Accessible toilets are located within 10 meters of the entrance to The Box.

Disabled parking spaces are available close by on Wood Street, Fleet Street and Slater Street.
