Join us for a screening of cutting-edge artists’ films and discover imaginative and immersive works that each address important topics in contemporary society. This year’s Jarman award shortlist are Cécile B. Evans, Beatrice Gibson, Mikhail Karikis, Hetain Patel, Imran Perretta and Rehana Zaman.

Touching on a wide range of subjects, these artists present works that explore new digital practices, experimental animation and fresh approaches to analogue filmmaking. From Cecile B. Evans’s surreal soap operas to Mikhail Karikis’s eco-parables, to stories from the flattened Jungle refugee camp in Imran Perretta’s 15 days and candid conversations from British Muslim women from Rehana Zaman. In Beatrice Gibson’s work, poetry is spliced with montaged news footage, and in Hetain Patel’s The Jump, the epic fantasy of superhero films is contrasted with his family home in Bolton, UK.

Inspired by visionary British filmmaker Derek Jarman, the Award recognises and supports artists working with the moving image. The shortlisted artists illustrate the spirit of inventiveness within art-film, highlighting the breadth of creativity and craftsmanship the medium has to offer, as well as its powerful ability to engage and provoke audiences.

The winner of the Film London Jarman Award will be announced on 25 November 2019 at the Barbican Center, receiving a £10,000 prize. The award is presented in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery, with support from Genesis Cinema and h club London.

We will be joined by artist Hetain Patel for a Q&A.
