Exploring the power and control of the mediated image, Mizuki Watanabe's In-Between Gaze (2010) playfully highlights our awareness of time and presence through a striking fusion of recorded and live images. Visitors are invited to place a magnifying glass in front of an out of focus projection to bring the image into focus, which includes a real-time image of themselves combined with pre-recorded footage. The piece questions how image technologies manipulate representation and truth, exploring time and space in the moving image. Central to the work, as in AVPD and Seers' installations, is the representation of the self, which underpins much of our interaction with image technologies.
