With a glossy mixture of computer-generated imagery, live actors and arabesque electronica, Nation Estate explores a vertical solution to Palestinian statehood. In Sansour's film, one colossal, slickly sci-fi skyscraper houses the entire Palestinian population, with each city on its own floor.
Intercity trips previously marred
by checkpoints are now made by elevators which become platforms for
communication. Elevator advertisements take on a life of their own,
drawing attention to core issues of life under occupation. The ‘future
problems’ they address are reminiscent of those standing in the way of
any progress today – suggesting that no negotiated solution will work
without resolving these central issues.
