Workshop 1

Thursday 23 January / 13:00–14:30

Searching for Objects: A Guided Walk for Gathering and Foraging

Put on your walking shoes and join us for a guided tour through the cultural and historical parts of Liverpool city centre, led by Andrea Ku, a socially engaged local artist. Andrea’s practice focuses on facilitating sustainable, collective, hands-on activities using natural and found materials to create useful items. Her work is characterised by its low-tech, low-cost approach with a minimal carbon footprint.

During the tour, you’re encouraged to collect various items, both natural and synthetic. These gathered objects will later serve as prompts for artist Miriam Quick’s sonification workshop in the afternoon.

Workshop 2

Thursday 23 January / 16:00–18:00

Data Sonification 101

Data sonification is the art and science of turning data into sound. Just as data can be visualised through bars, lines, and colours, it can also be sonified – transformed into pitches, sounds, and audio effects. Journalist and musician Miriam Quick will lead this workshop, in which she’ll share:

  • What data sonification is
  • When and why you might use it
  • How to map data to sound
  • Tools and resources to explore sonification further

You’ll have the opportunity to collect your own data or use objects gathered during Andrea’s workshop to map it to sound, creating and performing your own sonification. No prior knowledge of data, sound, or music is required! Bring a laptop if you wish, as well as objects that could create interesting sounds.

Andrea Ku is a socially engaged Liverpool artist whose work is rooted in sustainable, collective, hands-on activities using natural and found materials. Her practice is low-tech, low-cost, and focused on reducing environmental impact. Inspired by her 13 years as a beekeeper, Andrea’s approach reflects the resilient, collective nature of honeybees.

Her projects include guided walks, canoe paddling, beekeeping, tree planting, landscape design and construction, litter picking, food growing, and community microscopy.

ABOUT MIRIAM QUICK
