Runtime: 74 mins

Genre: Documentary, Drama

A time capsule of the late 1960s, this international arthouse film follows the story of Gabriel (Paul Okpokam), a young student from Nigeria, who moves to San Francisco. Lovestruck and culturally stranded he faces the harsh realities of life and racism in the 60’s.

Now over 50 years since it’s original release, this international arthouse has been restored and specially selected by FACT to screen during Black History Month.

Interwoven through his adventures in America are glances back to his African origins, and the dualities of the political and racial mood of the US alongside the terrible and elusive Civil War in Nigeria. Through a blend of irony, poetry and nuanced storytelling, Bushman guides viewers through the profound complexities of the human experience.

Part documentary and part imagined, Bushman (1971) is a rare sort of film portrait which takes a decisive turn when Paul Okpokam is wrongfully arrested during a strike at San Francisco State College. Unable to finish his film without his lead actor, director David Schickele pivots powerfully into documentary to trace what happens next.
