Oliver Tambo's London Recruits + Q&A [18]

Runtime: 103 mins

Genre: Thriller

At the height of apartheid an international group of young people - students and workers - answered Oliver Tambo’s call for undercover agents. Not all of them made it home. This award winning film reveals the story for the first time: the recruits, those who inspired them and the people who made their missions possible.

Gordon Main's thriller recounts the real-life ‘secret war against apartheid’ by ordinary men and women in the 60s and 70s, recruited by ANC leaders in exile, Oliver Tambo and Ronnie Kasrils. The film was awarded Joburg Film Festival 2024 Best Doc and Best Pan African Film – Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards 2024.

"An edge-of-your-seat thriller." — Variety

About Mandela8

Mandela8's initial vision was to see a permanent artwork that functions as an unique performance, conversation and contemplation space established at a Toxteth Liverpool 8 heritage site, to celebrate, commemorate and pursue the legacy of Nelson Mandela’s outstanding achievement for humanity. This vision was completed in summer 2024. Nelson Mandela’s importance to Liverpool is well documented, and in Toxteth, the area known as Liverpool 8, Mandela was, and remains, a highly significant role model.

The project helps conserve and share existing historical and contemporary heritage, support community development and cohesion, and has produced a series of creative commissions and collaborations, with widespread community and educational engagement and participation. This work is located on an exceptional site of Heritage significance, a man-made island in the ornamental lake in Grade 2 listed Princes Park (Joseph Paxton, Architect).

Mandela8's other community projects include its annual Acts of Kindness celebration; the award-winning Roots & Wings youth programme; and the Angela Holligan Book Collection schools initiative. For more information on the charity and all its activity, please visit mandela8.org.uk
